College senior Bryce Donaldson’s life changes after a mysterious encounter with a creature under the full moon.

Bryce Donaldson was a 20-year old fuck up. Born to middle-class parents in the middle of Nowhereville USA, and blessed with a middling IQ, his whole life was just middle.

When he started attending Oberon University, he’d dreamt of finally starting his life, springing into a world full of possibility and newfound freedom. But, in the three short years since he first set foot on campus, almost nothing had changed. He was still the same stringy brunette who faded into the cinderblock walls. The only difference now was the impending weight of graduation staring him down from only a few months away.

It seemed that each day blurred into memories of floating between meaningless classes that fulfilled his duties as a Humanities major, whatever that meant, heating dollar ramen on his illegal dorm room hot plate, and catching the occasional movie or open mic night with his few, strange, artsy, endearingly-pretentious friends.

As his life ticked away before him, the only thing that seemed to stop the clock and break the mundanity was swimming. Bryce had joined the swim team in high school on a whim, after seeing that Jerry Helton, the hottest guy in 10th grade had won gold in backstroke. Though he’d never been particularly gifted, his gawky frame not blessed with the coordination to paddle himself through the water with any grace, somehow, the hypnotizing rhythm of water splashing and weightless freedom of the pool kept bringing him back, long after a minor shoulder injury ended Jerry’s career in the 11th grade. It only seemed natural that when the Oberon Marlons, his college’s pathetic swim team, was recruiting, he joined.

“Nice job out there, Donaldson.” It was Harrison Tandwell, the team’s star swimmer. “You’re almost matching my high school times.”

Bryce let out a soulless laugh and flashed a faint smile through the steam of the locker room as he changed in the corner, attempting to hide behind a tiny towel.

“How long have you been swimming for again? I mean, I hate to judge a beginner.”

Harrison laughed and clapped his hand against Bryce’s wet back. “Just joking buddy. It’s all in good fun.”

Harrison led the way as the rest of the team put on their things and shuffled out.

Finally, they were gone. Bryce realized he had been holding his breath and finally let it go. He dropped the towel and removed his speedo. There was a certain stigma to being the only out gay guy on the team, and although it was never spoken about, changing at the same time as the guys always seemed like a no-go. Of course, comparing his soft, lanky, speedo-clad body to the lithe, toned athletes on the team every day didn’t help his self-esteem and provided yet another reason to wait. Although he was one of the seniors on the team, next to his masculine, muscled teammates, he felt like a child. Although his soft stomach, round face, and limbs that looked like they could’ve been drawn by a kindergarten art class all screamed average, next to the other swimmers, you could’ve been comparing Mr. Potato Head to Michelangelo’s David.

He stepped into some sweatpants, pulled a t-shirt over his flat, hairless chest, grabbed his bag, and stepped outside.

It was dark, surprisingly dark, for this time of year. The ripe full moon pierced through the fog. Strange. It was a long walk from the athletics complex back to his dorm, but the added exercise was a welcome cool-down after a long swim. At least it usually was when he could see where he was going. He set off across the quad, staring at his shoes and remembering that he had a test on Aristotle tomorrow he’d neglected to study for.

After what seemed like only a few short minutes a sound made him look up. A low, rumbling growl coming from the thicket of bushes in front of him vibrated though his bones. This was not his normal route. He must’ve gotten turned around in the dark and was now facing some strange creature in a small wooded area on the other side of campus.

Bryce remembered everything he’d ever heard about animal encounters. Stay calm. Move slowly. He clutched his bag and took a few steps backward.

CRACK.

Branches snapped as the creatures darted unseen between the foliage surrounding him.

He could feel his breath pick up, and his heart started to race. The growling grew louder, the creature was closer. Suddenly, any rationality he’d had disappeared, and every impulse he had told him to run.

Bryce took off, heading out of the bramble, nearly tripping on the stones and branches on the path. He could see the quad now, lit by streetlamps. Just as his heart rate started to settle at the first sight of safety, his body was thrown to the ground by the shadowy creature, which tore at his leg before darting off into the night.

There he was, lying in the mulch at the edge of campus, nothing in his bag but a speedo and towel, bleeding from the wound on his leg. He let out a scream in pain, but nobody was around to hear. Usually, swim practice went late, but not so late that nobody would be around. But this wasn’t like other nights. Minutes passed, or it could’ve been hours, and it became clear that nobody was coming. As the initial pain subsided, Bryce pulled himself to his feet and limped back into the night towards his dorm.
